Celebrating the First Financial Planning Degree Graduate at Texas A&M University
The first graduate with a degree in financial planning at Texas A&M University, Carter Monrad ’24, made history at the recent graduation commencement for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Monrad, who initially pursued a degree in agricultural economics, switched majors after discovering his passion for financial planning. Encouraged by his professor, Nathan Harness, Monrad became the first student to graduate from the new program.
With a strong family background in financial planning, Monrad had a unique perspective and a solid foundation for his career. The program at Texas A&M is designed to align with the Certified Financial Planner Board’s educational requirements, giving students a comprehensive education in retirement planning, investments, and financial fundamentals.
Since starting his career as a financial planning analyst at Hartmann Taylor Wealth Management in Dallas, Monrad has already experienced the benefits of the program. His extensive background in financial planning has given him a significant advantage in the workforce.
Outside of the classroom, Monrad was deeply involved in campus life, serving as president of his fraternity and a Fish Camp counselor for three years. He was also a member of the 12th Man Foundation Collegiate Council, serving as an ambassador to encourage student involvement.
Reflecting on his time at Texas A&M, Monrad expressed his love for the spirit and community at the university, stating that he has always felt at home surrounded by a community that feels like family. For students considering a career in financial planning, Monrad offered this advice: “If you’re interested in finance and want to help people, major in financial planning. It’s a people-oriented career.”
